Are you aware that every month of the calendar year has its own birthstones?
Everybody born in January shares the same birthstone regardless of the year in which they are born. The same goes for people who are born in February and March and April, and all the way through the calendar year until the twelfth month of the year; December.
Birthstones are in fact gemstones, which are semi-precious stones that are derived from minerals. Some people know and like the birthstones that match the month of their birth, while other people are not aware of which stone, or gem, corresponds to their month of birth or do not particularly like the style or color of their birthstone.
Do you know which gemstone is your birthstone? If not, just take a quick glance at the list below to find out what is called your “modern birthstone”.
Gemstones And The Modern Birthstones By Month Of Birth
January – Garnet- February – Amethyst
- March – Aquamarine
- April – Diamond
- May – Emerald
- June – Moonstone
- July – Ruby
- August – Peridot
- September – Sapphire
- October – Opal or Tourmaline
- November – Topaz or Citrine
- December – Turquoise or Tanzanite
Now, that being said there are some variations when it comes to birthstones. For example, there are “modern birthstones”, “traditional birthstones”, “mystical birthstones”, and “ayurvedic birthstones” to name a few.
However, the most closely related birthstones are the modern and traditional birthstones. In fact, there are not too many variations between the two distinct birthstone charts.
Specifically, the differences between modern and traditional birthstones number four in total and they are found in the months of March, June, August, and December.
Gemstones And The Traditional Birthstones By Month Of Birth
- January – Garnet
- February – Amethyst
- March – Bloodstone
- April – Diamond
- May – Emerald
- June – Alexandrite
- July – Ruby
- August – Sardonyx
- September – Sapphire
- October – Tourmaline
- November – Citrine
- December – Zircon
The most interesting observation between these two birthstone charts is that the colors of the gemstones remain the same, or very similar, whether using the traditional or modern birthstone chart. The gems that are incorporated in these charts as official birthstones were originally determined in the early 1900s by the American Gem Trade Association.
Since that time, only one modification to the charts has been made. That modification was made in the year 2002 and it was for the month of December. In 2002, the American Gem Trade Association added tanzanite as an official birthstone to the month of December as a modern birthstone.
What Are Mythical And Ayurvedic Birthstones?
Both of these birthstone charts are at least 1,000 years old and are rooted in traditional belief systems and ancient customs. Mythical birthstones are believed to have originated in Tibet and they are said to help a person overcome the challenges associated with his or her birth month.
The Ayurvedic birthstone chart is rooted in Ayurveda, which is a form of alternative medicine that is widely practiced throughout all of South Asia. In the Sanskrit language, the word Ayurveda is made of two words meaning “life” and “science”. As such, a person’s Ayurvedic birthstone is said to promote healing.
